Poetic License

Usually spring makes such a quiet entrance here in West Michigan. Unlike the month of March which can come rather like a roaring lion, spring creeps softly on the April rains and suddenly bursts forth with first the snowdrops and then the tulips and daffodils before the trees drop the leaf casings and those small pale green leaves unfold like many crepe paper wonders hand made and dropped to those tiny tips on branches throughout the trees in front of my home.

I love this season so much. Today I got to play with dirt and seeds as I readied the cold frame to hold those seeds in our cold April days and to keep them warm as they begin to grow. Three trays of herbs, and flowers began today, and as I closed the windowed lid I hoped I would get three trays of living plants for my gardens.

I hope you can get out where ever your feet roam near home and find some signs of this season of new birth and the greening of all that grows.

  1. Your words "spring creeps softly on the April rains and suddenly bursts forth... small pale green leaves unfold like many crepe paper wonders" describe the beginning of Spring in such a lovely way.

My feet did get out and roam a bit this past weekend :-)

  2. I'm amazed at how my attitudes change with the seasons, wherever I am. Spring of course here is not so much about warming up as it is a return to the usual. Aren't the Lion and Lamb symbolism of March ("in like a Lion out like a Lamb") of celestial origin? (I got caught in an April 1st blizzard once ... and that was no joke!)

  3. Thanks, Linda. I love using expressive descriptions of what I love, and spring is one of my favorite seasons. I am glad you got out to enjoy the season too - your lovely picture show it!

    Robert,
I think that spring means new beginnings and that's why it sticks with us.

From what I have read I do believe the lion and lamb symbolism came from the images from astrology and the times of the year they represented in the 16th or 17th centuries...but there are so many different explanations that I'm not really sure. :-)

  5. Bax,
Thanks! Every so often I wax a bit poetic. I have to write it through and then it's gone again for a while...but I like the way it feels.

  6. I found you on She Writes! I enjoyed your post. I am having a garden for the first time this year and have started everything inside (still cold at night). Wish me luck!

  7. I am a gardener who loves life and nature! I do a cold frame every year to start those seeds that grow to flowers and veggies. Right now it is all I hope for - and it's enough! :-)
